TESTIMONAL FOR AJFITCHET | ARCHITECT
Our brief to ajfitchet architect LLP was to help us to breathe new life into The Bothy, to make it into a very special holiday home. Given the small size of the nineteenth century single storey building, this was quite a challenge, but through a combination of professionalism, local knowledge, and technical expertise, allied with the clients’ extensive input, a very special place has indeed been created.
The practice’s knowledge of local Planning and Building Control authorities and procedures meant that the crucial formal approvals were efficiently procured, allowing the project to proceed smoothly. During the construction phase, the intention had been to re-use some stone from the original building, to form a feature wall panel in the living space. Unfortunately, the sand stone was too soft, but ajfitchet advised there was a local quarry, recently opened that could provide suitable stone, not only for the wall panel, but also for the flooring. The results were stunning.
Space-saving design was critical and here the practice’s technical expertise came to the fore. This allowed the width of walls and perimeter insulation zones to be minimised, to provide additional living space, with no loss of acoustic or thermal performance. Further examples of technical prowess were the detailed design and specification, which created a comfortable, cosy, energy-efficient house that costs very little to run.
We are very pleased with the resulting holiday home.
WHAT IS THE BOTHY?
The Bothy is a small property formerly used as a fishers Bothy, with a living quarter and small sleeping areas.
It was converted into private holiday accommodation by its present owners for use by their respective families to escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
